# Abort a call

POST https://api.smallest.ai/atoms/v1/conversation/abort
Content-Type: application/json

Stops a call at any stage: queued, ringing, or live. Works for every conversation type (outbound, inbound, web calls and chat).

The response depends on where the call is:

* **Still queued** - the call is removed from the queue and never dials. Returns `200` with `status: "aborted"`.
* **Dialing or live** - the abort is sent to the running call, which ends within 5 seconds. Returns `202` with `status: "aborting"`. The call's final status becomes `aborted` once it has ended; read it from `GET /conversation/{id}` or the `post-conversation` webhook.

An aborted call is billed like any other call: only for the time after it was answered, rounded up to your billing pulse. A call aborted while queued or ringing costs nothing. Post-call analytics still run for a call that was answered. Aborted campaign calls are not re-dialed when the campaign resumes.

## Authentication

- `Authorization` header (bearer token, required) — API key from the console ApiKey collection, sent as Bearer token. Also accepts session cookies for browser-based auth.

## Request

This endpoint expects an object.

- `callId` (string, required) — The `callId` returned by `POST /conversation/outbound` or visible in `GET /conversation`.
- `reason` (string, optional) — Optional free-text reason. Stored on the call log for support and audit.

## Response

### 200

The call was still queued and is now aborted. It never dials.

- `status` (boolean, optional)

### 202

The call is dialing or live. It has been told to end and will reach `aborted` within 5 seconds.

## Errors

### 400 Bad Request Error

Invalid request body, for example a missing `callId` or a `reason` longer than 500 characters.

### 401 Unauthorized Error

The API key in the `Authorization` header is invalid or revoked.

### 403 Forbidden Error

The request has no `Authorization` header. Send `Authorization: Bearer <API key>`.

### 404 Not Found Error

No call found with that callId in your organization.

### 409 Conflict Error

The call has already ended (`completed`, `no_answer`, `failed`, `cancelled`, `blocked` or `aborted`), so there is nothing to abort.

## Types

### AbortCallResponseData

- `callId` (string, optional)
- `status` (enum, optional) — `aborted` - the call was still queued and is now final. `aborting` - the call was dialing or live and is ending; its final status becomes `aborted`.
  - Allowed values: `aborted`, `aborting`
- `previousStatus` (string, optional) — The call's status when the abort was received (for example `in_queue`, `in_progress` or `active`).
